Why should I hire a Doula?
A Doula is a companion who is present during a person’s pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience. Doulas provide support, use of movement and various other types of techniques to increase calmness, peace and comfort. There have been many studies done which show the benefit of having a Doula. These studies have shown the following…
  • Babies are more likely to be born without undesired medical interventions
  • Birthing parents are less likely to need undesired pain medication
  • Birthing parents have shorter labors
  • Both parents report higher levels of satisfaction with their birth experience
  • Babies had higher APGAR Scores after birth (APGAR scores are used to assess babies’ health and wellbeing)
These outcomes aren’t magic…they are the impact of a continuous, compassionate support person being present with you throughout labor. Doulas are trained to educate parents about the choices they have during pregnancy, postpartum and birth in order to help them create the birth experience they desire. Doulas guide the use of the techniques during birth and provide love, compassion and nonjudgmental support throughout the entire process.

I have my family/friends/Midwife/ObGyn to support me. Do I still need a Doula?
A Doula cannot replace the support you get from your family, partner or friends during your pregnancy and birth process! The love and support they can give you during your birth is wonderful and increases more of your Oxytocin or “Love” hormones, which is healthy for you and baby! However, research has shown that the presence of a Doula produces the outcomes listed above due to their additional levels of training... which can actually improve the ability of your partner, family and friends to support you! Also, friends or family mean well, but occasionally may have reactions, responses, voice opinions that feel out of place or unhelpful during birth. A Doula can help address their reactions, responses, or opinions in a manner which allows you  to stay focused on your birth. Partners sometimes need a break, feel overwhelmed or have their own thoughts and fears which need attention during birth so they can be fully present. Doulas will support your partner in having what they need, so they can be fully supportive to you.

A Doula is not at all a replacement for your Midwife or ObGyn! While Doulas are trained in some of the same knowledge, we are not able to fulfill their role. Instead, Doulas are trained in ways to serve as part of your  birth team in a manner which complements the role of your Midwife or ObGyn.
